Concoct Your Autoresponder Sequence

autoresponder-seriesIf your free offer will span over multiple days (such as an e-course), you have probably already created an autoresponder sequence. If not, get busy creating a series of messages. Creating this sequence helps you to start building a relationship with your subscribers so that they grow to know, like and trust you. Additionally, you are developing an income stream because you can begin offering products or services in your autoresponder sequence.
You may want to start with five to seven messages; however, commit to adding additional messages to your series over the next few weeks. Before you know it, you will have several months of content that is sent out to your subscribers automatically. My list subscribers receive an email every five days for 11 months.  This list is nearly hands-free, save for the periodic live broadcast that I create.

Keep in mind that you are creating information that may not be viewed by your subscribers for months or years to come, your content needs to be evergreen–just as relevant a year from now as it is today. You would not want to write about the latest fads in your series. You want to write about a topic’s basics that have stood the test of time.
The first thing you should include in your series, of course, is the gift you promised on your opt-in. If the newly subscribed person does not receive what they expected, you will lose them right away. The remainder of your series should be about solving your target market’s most dire problem. You can lick some of their problems for free in your newsletter content. You can lick other problems by steering them towards paid products or services. There is no need to use high-pressure tactics in all of your emails. Intermingle recommendations and links for paid products/services into some of your freebie content.

  1. I think the first thing I have to do is set up an autoresponder period! I always read about how I should really have a newsletter opt-in list but I never do it. My reasoning behind it is that I’m not sure what I would e-mail to my subscribers. Great suggestion about starting a series though. Gives me something to think about.

  3. Interesting!! I usually create autoresponder sequences that last 30-45 days. It sounds like you think they need to be longer. So we need to be thinking in terms of a couple of months or so?

  4. I love this, thank you for making it seem so easy to get these autoresponders over and done. Continuing to add them a little at a time, it a great idea. I was looking at the BIG PICTURE, and not getting them done because of overwhelm.

    You hit the nail on the head! Our first auto responder must be that “freebie” we promised. Then, we need to have the mindset that it must be evergreen. Lots of folks may opt in to our offer, but some get to it months down the line.

    And yes, we do have to write content that does stand the test of time.

  7. I got allot of useful information on interaction with folks from this article. Yet, I have and will continue to be hands on. I walk them through various fundamentals live and using auto-responders never was or is part of my activities.

    Taking the time to create original content is something I enjoy daily with various characters out here it just makes sense to create different introductions for each. They are based on the due diligence I complete on each person prior to me making contact. I find one thing that we have in common and take it from there.

    My first contacts usually has a great response with a live 15 minute meeting. I listen to each person of what their support service and products they may have for our communities. Also, how much navigation on a computer they have had. Then gather their mailing address along with other profile information.

    Works great each time and I interact with them weekly so, it is a great trade off vs. auto-responders. They are not warm to me and get very aggravating being received.

  8. Great read Rachel, I use evergreen content in my autoresponder and I remove the dates from my posts. I found that when people arrived at a post that was 2 years old they tended to dismiss the information as out of date. By removing the dates they read the content, and hopefully took action on it. Of course they can tell the date from the comments, but some things like marketing fundamentals are timeless!

  10. It’s really not so easy to create an autoresponder sequence, at least, not one that gets a decent open rate.

    It’s very common for people to open the first email to get their “free offer” and then never open another one. So even when you’re delivering your free offer, it’s good to try to give some additional glimpse into why they need to keep opening your emails. Something like, “in the next few days I’ll be showing you how to…” That starts getting them into the habit of looking forward to your emails.

    I’m glad you mentioned the evergreen aspect too, Rachel. Even though I know that, I often find myself writing things that will soon be dated. Thanks for the reminder.

    Great post.
    I was wondering, do you split your list into two separate ones i.e. Prospects and Customers?

    If so, what do you do with your customer list? Broadcasts or another followup sequence?

      Yes, I do have segmented lists for prospects and customers. My ‘customers’ receive additional broadcast messages containing exclusive offers and free premium content.

    And beyond impressive, the fact that you’ve got enough email sequence follow up messages to last eleven months! If you sent one every five days.

    That’s being consistent! Also like how you advise to make sure your subscriber gets whatever it is they opted in for imediately in your sequence.
    Great advice.
    And also how you advice that it’s simply not necessary to use high pressure sales tactics, but instead to keep your content “solution based” evergreen content.
