3 Tips to Build Your Online List

The money is in the list. You’ve heard this before, right? Though many have heard it before, list building remains the most overlooked elements by business owners.  Many of them are not consistently working on building their list.  I’ve spoken with people who admit that they received some results from list building activities and to them I would ask how they could maximize what they are already doing.

No matter the stage your business is in, building a list of your ideal prospects is important to your success and using the internet to leverage your growth can be one of the most effective methods of building a strong, solid and profitable list. Why? Because the people on your email list are interested in your brand that you can make offers to. Additionally, without an adequate list of targeted clients you do not have a thriving business that you can create ongoing profits from.  

How do you build your list online?

Where do you start? What do you do first? There are a myriad of methods from Facebook , Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram and more. It can make a businesswoman woozy just trying to think about where to go and what to do online to attract more clients.  Following are three simple strategies to start attracting more of your key prospects:

1 – Restrict Your Time

The biggest mistake I see businesswomen make online is the amount of time they waste. I believe that we need to log on, work, socialize for a brief time and then log out. Social media does not call for gobs of time to work it–it calls for a plan.

2 – Online Networking

Think of the internet and the social media platforms you decide to work on as online networking sites. It is not just for promoting your business, but also for finding strategic partners; connections and potential influencers who can help you become more visible. Think of social media as an online networking event. You are now going to look at using these platforms from the perspective of attending a live networking event—except you will be doing it online.

3 – Look Beyond the Big Social Media Platforms

Do not overlook the not so obvious free membership programs, forums and groups.   Yahoo groups and organized topic-based forums existed long before Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn came on the scene.  They still exist and are fab places to find others to collaborate with, get clients and promote your business.

    I know that I spend too much time on social media, but at least I have friendships that are healthy, that have been formed through social media. I don’t think the time is totally wasted. Yes, list building should be a priority, but so many people don’t want one more thing in their in-box.

  3. Solid tips. I would add that if you feel overwhelmed with all the social networks out there, free yourself. What I mean is, choose one or two where you think your peeps are hanging out. Get comfortable there and then, when you’re ready, you can pursue other avenues as well.

    this mat=y surprise you and myself as well.. I do not have a so called list because two reasons.. 1.. years a go I had an Aweber account and some how I let expired since I did not know how to use, no matter how many seminars I attended, I still did not know (hard head haha 🙂

    2… I was with a new autoresponder for 4 years now and I never knew how to install on my blog and they want $100 to do it them selves and if I change blog I need to pay again.. well I did not like the deal and so never used.

    Now I am working with a coach and the first thing she asked me how big is my list. my reply was, “none”.

    She was stanned.. so the short story is, THANKS so much for listing these solid tips.. it looks like I will start building my list … FINALLY!!!

  6. Good points. Wasting time is a challenge for every marketer. I keep a daily schedule, allowing a portion(s) of the day to certain tasks and usually am able to stick to it. Otherwise I can get lost in my computer following up on exciting things that won’t make me any money!!

  7. I am trying hard not to waste time as I used to do. I woke up and looked around and realized how much I had been neglecting around the house. Tasks like painting rooms which I intended to start doing 2 years ago, when I first moved into this house, have not been started.

    One of my aims is to get involved with more Australian based online marketing communities and make local more contacts rather than spending too much time on FB.

    Nick, I agree that it is not easy getting the hang of autoresponders. They are one of the only tools I have needed to use tutorial videos for – go through them slowly step by step too.

  9. it’s becoming clear to me that you really have to decide how you want to spend your time online. You can’t do everything. Something has to give and this is where choosing what’s important matters. I now use a timer to keep me on track. We all have the same amount of time in a day. It’s how we use those hours that count///

    Terrific tips Rachel! I preach #1 to my clients. There is no reason to sit on social media all day. It will end up doing nothing but sucking up a ridiculous amount of time. Before you know it, you’ve spent hours liking, commenting and sharing with no business results to show for it.
